On July 21, 1999, the members of the Sisterhood petitioned the Chapter of the Brotherhood of Saint Gregory for independence. The Brothers granted their petition and on Saturday, July 24, the Sisters of Saint Gregory became an autonomous Christian Community at a festival Eucharist at Graymoor Friary (Society of the Atonement) in Garrison, New York. The Rt. Rev. Catherine S. Raskam, Bishop Suffragan of New York, and Bishop Visitor to the new community, presided over the institution of Sr. Clare as the community's superior and con-celebrated the Eucharist with the Rt. Rev. Rodney Michel, Bishop Suffragan of Long Island and Bishop Visitor to the Brotherhood of Saint Gregory.
